Step 2: Back Up Your Company File(s)
This is the most important step. Always, always create a full backup before upgrading.
To back up:
Open your company file in QuickBooks 2022.
Go to File > Back Up Company > Create Local Backup.
Choose "Local Backup" and follow the prompts to save it to an external drive or secure folder.
If something goes sideways during the upgrade, you’ll be glad you have this safety net.
Step 3: Download & Install QuickBooks Desktop 2024
Once you’ve purchased or downloaded QuickBooks 2024:
Close all running applications.
Run the installer (usually named something like
QuickBooks2024.exe
).Follow the on-screen instructions. You can choose Express or Custom installation.
Once installed, open the application (but don’t open your company file just yet!).
Tip: If you’re upgrading on multiple workstations, install QuickBooks on the server first.

Step 4: Update Your Company File
QuickBooks 2024 will ask you to upgrade your company file format when you open it for the first time.
To upgrade the file:
Launch QuickBooks 2024.
Go to File > Open or Restore Company.
Choose your 2022 company file.
QuickBooks will prompt you to create a backup before upgrading the file—do it.
Let the program complete the upgrade process.
Important: Once a file is updated for 2024, it cannot be opened in older versions like 2022.
Step 5: Verify Everything is Working
After upgrading:
Run a few test transactions.
Print reports like Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet.
Reconnect bank feeds if necessary.
Recheck user permissions and preferences.
If you’re using third-party apps, check for 2024 compatibility or update connectors.
